TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – College football is here! Week 1 began earlier this week, but the heart of the games is played on Saturday. Between a few conference opponents opening their seasons, a neutral site top-25 matchup, and a handful of other rivalry storylines, the excitement is palpable across the country.

Not every program will be playing in this weekend’s slate of games, but you can be sure that the ones who are will see heavy betting action from the legal sportsbooks in the area.

Remember, some states have restrictions on the games you can bet on. For example, betting on collegiate teams at Iowa sportsbooks is allowed but they do not offer player prop bets for the college action. Meanwhile, other states like New Jersey do not allow for betting lines to be offered on any school that is from the area, regardless of where the game is being played (or if two non-Jersey programs are playing inside the state).

With this, bettors can always switch borders into a different state without their restrictions, but this can be a hassle. Instead, using an offshore betting site may be the best bet, as travel time and convenience are points of emphasis in support of the overseas operators.

Just because a line is offered in a local sportsbook, it does not mean that is “the” line for the game. Every sportsbook uses different equations to come to their spread and moneyline numbers. Then after bettors lay their money down, these odds can change even more in order for the books to keep their balance.

A good bettor never buys the first line they see, but shops around for the best option to take. This is just another reason why the offshore sportsbooks are still superior to the in-state counterparts. But regardless of your outlet for sports betting in New York, be sure to tune in to one of these games:

Buffalo is the third-favorite to win the AFC East, as the New England Patriots and New York Jets are listed above them.

Since Marv Levy’s 1980s-90s tenure, the Bills have yet to keep a coach for four full seasons or more.

NEW YORK – The first Buffalo Bills preseason game is less than a month away and fans of the NFL are licking their chops ready to bet on this upcoming season.

But betting lines and odds have been released, despite a few more weeks of waiting. While the Bills aren’t projected to have a Super Bowl winning season, you can find value in odds in a variety of other locations (however if you wanted to bet on them to win, do it now, as the odds are +10000).

Will The Buffalo Bills Make The Playoffs?

Yes: +325

No: -450

The Bills made the playoffs two seasons ago, breaking a nearly 20-year drought. In the 1990s, Buffalo went on a run, making the playoffs in 8 times. There is potential for this current squad to match that production, especially with the likes of Josh Allen.

Allen comes into his second NFL season after proving he can get it done on the ground as well as through the air. He finished with a team-high in rushing touchdowns, rushing yards, and (removing 1 rush for 9 yards from Patrick DiMarco), average yards per rush.

However, with the addition of TJ Yeldon and Frank Gore amongst veteran LeSean McCoy, Allen will likely see a step back in rushing production this year. Still, he remains the only Bills player aside from “LeShady”, on the odds board shown to lead the league in rushing touchdowns (+5000) at the end of the year.

Betting on McCoy to have a league-leading rushing season is questionable at best, as he has only played a full season once in the last four years. But McCoy has six seasons (of ten) rushing for 1000+ yards, so anything is possible.

Who Will Win The AFC East?

Bills: +1000

Buffalo comes in as the third-favorite in the division to take the title. The New England Patriots are the clear leader amongst the AFC East teams, having won the previous 10 titles. But with another year under Tom Brady’s belt and the retirement of Rob Gronkowski, the Pats aren’t as deadly as years’ past.

The Bills will still need to find a way to win, as they are 73-43-1 against the Patriots all-time, including an 0-5 record in the last few meetings.

The New York Jets are second to win the division but hired a coach in Adam Gase who has a career losing record. His sole playoff appearance came in his first season with the Miami Dolphins but led his team to a diminishing record both years after.

The Bills do hold the all-time lead over the Jets, sitting with a 62-55 record but spent the majority of the 2010s splitting the regular season victories.

As for the Dolphins, we’ll just leave this fun fact: they are last in the league (odds-wise) to make the playoffs this year.

How Many Games Will The Buffalo Bills Win?

Over 6.5: -170

Under 6.5: +140

Oddsmakers have set the season mark for the Buffalo Bills rather low and the bettors are clearly showing that the over is favorited.

Though the Bills would have missed this mark last year (finished with 6 wins), the first year under coach Sean McDermott would have made the cut (with 9 wins).

With one more year under center, SportsBettingNewYork.com thinks Josh Allen should find much more comfort in McDermott’s system, leading the team to 7 or more victories.

Despite going through 10 coaches over the past 20 seasons, the Bills have won 7 or more games in more than half of those instances (11). However, their six seasons with 6 wins (in the same time span) might leave bettors slightly nervous on taking the over.

To help ease the tension, looking at more recent production in Buffalo should leave bettors feeling slightly more confident, as the Bills have won 7 or more games in all of the last five seasons except last year.

The projected launch for retail wagering is before the start of the NFL season.

Governor Andrew Cuomo may not sign a mobile betting bill even if legislators approve a measure.

ALBANY, N.Y. – The timeline for legalizing mobile sports betting in New York has been pressing on the minds of Senators and Assemblymembers of the state.

With land-based sports betting already approved, regulations set by the New York Gaming Commission, and the expected launch to occur in a few months, online betting has been left behind.

This stems heavily from miscommunication between the mobile bill sponsors, Joe Addabbo Jr. (D- Howard Beach) and Gary Pretlow (D- Mount Vernon), and Governor Andrew Cuomo.

Cuomo has the belief that a constitutional amendment is required to add mobile wagering to the laws, but has also set beliefs that a certain wording in the bill’s text could allow for it without a change.

Regardless, the legislators have been tirelessly working on approving the expansion before their June 19 adjournment date.

According to Senator Addabbo Jr., the lawmakers are scheduling a time to vote on NY SB 17 early next week.

The vote comes after certain amendments were added to the text, including a better understanding of in-stadium wagering.

In the previous version of the bill, any professional sports stadium (with seating for 15,000 or more) could offer sports betting services but only if no other operators were present in the state.

This would have excluded arenas such as New Era Field and Citi Field. However, the legislators removed the section about having no other operators present, as it now would allow for any stadium (with capacity over 15,000) to offer their services.

In attempts to make a smooth transition between the Senate Floor and the Assembly Floor, the Assembly version of the bill, NY A 6113 has been updated to correspond with the updates.

While the chances are slim that mobile sports betting in New York gets approved into law this year, one thing is for certain: mobile betting will not launch this year in NY.

After approval, additional regulations (including a required public commenting period), licensing approval, system testing, and more have to be finalized before the first action can occur via mobile devices.

Until then, New York sports bettors will have to venture to one of the four upstate commercial casinos, to one of the many tribal casinos, or into New Jersey to take action on their teams.
