The Standstill Continues On New York Mobile Sports Betting

Sports Betting USA held a conference in NYC this past Tuesday where legal mobile sports betting for the state of New York was a topic.
New York currently has four casinos in the upstate area where residents may wager on sporting events.
Many legislators in the state are pushing for legalization as so many residents are traveling to New Jersey to use their mobile platform, allowing the Garden State to benefit in revenue.

NEW YORK – The standstill on the issue of New York mobile sports betting continues. In June, four upstate casinos received approval to open up legal sportsbooks, however, lawmakers were never sold on the idea of residents using their phones to place wagers on the games. One person, in general, has qualms on mobile sports betting and that person is basically the decision-maker himself, Governor Andrew Cuomo.

“Sports betting, first of all, does not make you that much money,” said Cuomo earlier this year. “They raised something like $13 million — $13 million is a rounding error in our state budget. I am not a fan of when you can bet anytime from your cellphone.”

Legislation for the state of New York opens back up in January where there is hope that changes can be made to the sports betting bill to involve mobile wagers. Cuomo maintains that this type of wager is not constitutional and for it to even be considered, a change in the constitution needs to be made. However, Senator Joseph Addabbo Jr knows mobile sports wagers will become a reality for the state at some point.

“It’s not a question of if; it’s when,” said Addabbo Jr. “It’s going to happen. People want to bet in New York. They don’t want to get in the car and drive two hours upstate, and they’d rather not get in the car and go over the bridge to New Jersey, but they’re doing that now.”

New Yorkers have been crossing the bridge into New Jersey and stopping at rest stops to place their mobile sports bets. While talks should begin in January, a report that should’ve been out by now listing the good and bad of making mobile sports betting legal will not be coming out until April 2020. While there is no telling what the report will say, Assemblyman J. Gary Pretlow is sure it will be in favor of launching the mobile platform.

“I know what the report’s going to say: It’s going to say, ‘Do it,’” Pretlow said.

It is estimated that a minimum of 30% of New Jersey’s mobile sports betting business is coming from residents of New York. As it stands, the Garden State gets 80% of all of their wagers on sporting events through the use of cellphone applications. If in 2020 New York sports betting is apporved, they would become the biggest state in the US to offer sports wagers from every available platform.

Yankees Considered Close Favorites To Win World Series

The American League Division Series (ALDS) begins on October 4 for the New York Yankees and the Minnesota Twins.
The Twins were knocked out of postseason runs when they’ve played the Yankees on four separate occasions; in 2003, 2004, 2009, and 2010.
Minnesota has odds of +1300 to win the World Series, a huge difference from the odds awarded to New York.

NEW YORK – The New York Yankees (103-59) could take home a World Series title if bookies have any say over the matter. New York is currently holding odds of +350 to win the Championship. Coming in first are the Houston Astros (107-55) with odds of +190 and then the Los Angeles Dodgers (106-56) with +250 at NY sportsbooks. The Yankees have not won a World Series Championship since 2009.

New York clinched their division title in the AL East, even with a season where 30 separate players were on the Injured List at some point during the year. On their trek to the Series, they first must play the Minnesota Twins (101-61) of the AL Central division to seal a chance at the American League Pennant. The Yankees and the Twins will participate in a round of five games. Whichever team wins three games first will move on to the AL Pennant championship.

Back in July, the Yankees and the Twins had a battle that went into extra innings, ultimately handing New York the win 14-12. However, it shows what a formidable opponent Minnesota is for the dynasty. Aaron Boone, the head coach for the Yankees has said of the July meetings that the Twins are a beast of a team. The Twins refer to the Yankees as a dragon they have to slay. The series between the two looks to be one of beasts and dragons. And you thought the “Game of Thrones” was over.

“We’ve got to play our best baseball. Period. End of story,’’ said Brian Cashman, Yankees’ General Manager. “Do everything in our power to find a way to get past them. We’re really excited for the opportunity. Our first step in this process was to win the division so we didn’t have to deal with the wild-card issue. That’s Phase I. Phase II is to try to find a way to get through this series. They happen to be our opponent and they’ll be a handful.’’

With the New York Yankees having such favorable odds when it comes to the World Series compared to the Minnesota Twins, they could very well be the first team to win three out of five and advance to the Pennant series. Game One starts on October 4 in the Bronx. Based on their July meetings, it’s sure to be a slugfest you won’t want to miss.

New York Sports Day Celebration To Be Hosted By NYRA

New York Sports Day is a day to celebrate all the teams in the New York area that have smaller platforms than that of the bigger professional teams.
Saratoga Race Course will host as a kickoff to their Travers Stakes Racing weekend.
Mascots from the various teams will be at the event for the fans to meet.

NEW YORK – The Saratoga Race Course in Saratoga Springs, New York will be the venue for the celebratory New York Sports Day on August 21st. The event will be hosted by the New York Racing Association (NYRA) with festivities being held from 11 am- 5 pm Wednesday with a free giveaway of a Saratoga beach towel for visitors.

"The passion we witness each day from our fans is certainly part of what makes Saratoga such a special place. We look forward to highlighting nearby teams and athletic programs that benefit from the same enthusiasm of Capital Region fans who make this area such an exciting place for sports," said Will Alempijevic, the Director of Guest Service for the NYRA. "We encourage everyone to join us as we kick off Travers Week with a day dedicated to celebrating local sports."

Head coach Carmen Maciariello for the Siena Saints basketball team and head coach Dave Smith of the RPI Engineers hockey team will be in attendance for a meet and greet of all their fans. This part of the event will be held in the Coca-Cola Saratoga Pavilion. The Pavilion itself will serve as an exhibit for all sports programs and regional affiliated teams, offering free tickets and other goods to visitors. Information for each team and the details of their seasons will also be provided.

Other recognized teams that will be represented during New York Sports Day will include the University of Albany Great Danes, the Adirondack Thunder, and the Tri-City ValleyCats. However, the team everyone wants to see is the Albany Empire, an arena football team out of Albany that just won the ArenaBowl XXXII against the Philadelphia Soul 45-27. Not only will fans have a chance to meet the team but they will also get to see the championship trophy on display. The New York Jets have undergone a coaching staff makeover and they have Adam Gase as their new head coach. Sam Darnold, 22, will be taking the lead in the quarterback position. NEW YORK – The New York Yankees put catcher Austin Romine on the pitcher’s mound during Thursday night’s game against the Boston Red Sox. This action showcases how much the Yankees are in need of a whole new squad of pitchers. Romine began pitching during the eighth inning of the game when the Yankees were down by a whopping 13 runs.

New York Jets Star Chris Herndon To Miss First 4 Games

Star tight end Chris Herndon has been suspended until October.
Herndon pleaded guilty to a DWI in January of this year.
The Jets season starts on September 8th where they will play the Buffalo Bills.

NEW YORK – Tight end Chris Herndon, 23, has been suspended for four games due to an incident that occurred in June 2018. Herndon was charged with a DWI and pleaded guilty in January 2019 after a woman involved in the accident claimed injury. These legal troubles have put him in direct violation of NFL policies and programs on the abuse of substances.

Herndon will not be able to play until October 7th. The Jets do not have much talent in the form of a replacement for Herndon through the four games that he will be missing. During his NFL debut last season, Herndon went 502 yards with 39 receptions and 4 touchdowns.

"He's a unicorn type of player, you don't see a lot of these players that can do all three phases of the game. Chris is unique," Jets Coach Adam Gase said at the NFL Combine workouts in Indianapolis. "I don't think you'll find a lot of tight ends that are able to be on the field all three downs. Obviously, he's a very good receiver, he's very good in the run game, and he did a really good job in pass protection last year.”

What Will The Jets Do In Herndon’s Absence?

Quarterback Sam Darnold has built up terrific chemistry with Herndon last season which only got stronger during the offseason. Until he can return to the field in October, it looks as though the New York Jets will try not to make any heavy plays in the tight end position. They have newly acquired Trevon Wesco from West Virginia in the fourth round of the NFL draft but whether or not Wesco will be used as a tight end or a fullback remains to be seen.

The other two tight ends on the roster are Daniel Brown and Eric Tomlinson. Brown had zero receptions last season and Tomlinson went 72 yards last season with a total of 8 receptions. NEW YORK – The New York Knicks have signed five new players to their 2019-2020 roster. These signees are all a part of the Knicks plan to rebuild their team into a dynamic set of players on the court. With all of the new faces on the team, the franchise just might have a shot at the finals this year, which is the endgame for Perry and Knicks fans everywhere.

“We’re thrilled to welcome Wayne, Taj, Elfrid, Bobby, and Julius to New York,” said General Manager Scott Perry in a statement. “Collectively, we’re adding a mix of extremely talented and experienced multi-dimensional players who will improve our team as we continue building out a deep and versatile roster. These players are all tough-minded, motivated and ready to compete, and we’re excited to have them as part of the Knicks family.”

What Players Were Signed?

Julius Randle, a 24-year-old power forward/center from the New Orleans Pelicans signed a three-year deal with the Knicks for a reported $63 million dollars. Randle is six foot nine and 250 pounds. During his one season with the Pelicans in 2018, Randle was able to bank some major stats to his record. He averaged over 25 points per game in a total of 49 games. Being as young as he is, he has still not hit the peak of his career which could result in some majors gains for the Knicks this season.

Bobby Portis, a 24-year-old power forward from the Washington Wizards signed a two-year contract with the New York Knicks for $31 million dollars. He is the tallest player to be signed by the team at six foot eleven and 250 pounds. In over 50 games last season, Portis was able to average over 14 points a game. Portis spent his 2018-2019 season split between the Chicago Bulls and the Washington Wizards. During his first game for the Wizards, he scored 30 points to beat the Cleveland Cavaliers 119-106.

Power forward Taj Gibson inked a two-year deal for $20 million dollars with the New York Knicks. Gibson, 34, is one of the older players to join the franchise. Gibson stands tall at six foot nine and weighs 232 pounds. Playing two seasons for the Minnesota Timberwolves and starting in 139 games while playing in 152 games during his time as a Timberwolf. He averaged over 10 points per game last season.

Shooting guard Wayne Ellington, 31, from the Detroit Pistons has signed on with the Knicks for two years. His contract is worth $16 million dollars. Ellington is six foot five and weighs 200 pounds. For the 2018-2019 season, he played with both the Miami Heat and the Detroit Pistons. In Miami, he played in 25 games and averaged over 8 points a game. While playing for Detroit, he took the court in 28 games and averaged 12 points per game.

Twenty-five-year-old point guard Elfrid Payton signed a two-year deal for $16 million dollars with the team. Payton is six foot four and weighs 185 pounds. He played his 2018-2019 season with the New Orleans Pelicans. He started all 42 games that he played in and averaged over 10 points per game while with the Pelicans.

Reggie Bullock was supposed to be the sixth player to sign with the Knicks, however, his contract is being given a second look. Bullock is a 28-year-old shooting guard/small forward from the Los Angeles Lakers. He is six foot seven and weighs 205 lbs. During his stint with the Lakers, he played in 19 games and averaged over 9 points a game. He originally had a two-year contract for $21 million dollars with the Knicks set to be signed but he has sustained multiple injuries throughout his four-year professional career history-making New York rethink the contract.

New York Sports Betting Is Legal, But How?

Sports betting was legalized in the state of New York in 2013 for their commercial casinos.
The four casinos that are allowed to offer sports wagers currently do not.
Mobile sports betting has been prohibited by Governor Andrew Cuomo.

NEW YORK - When it comes to wagering on sports in the state of New York, the wheels have been in motion since 2013. Six years ago the state signed Senate Bill S5883, to enable sports betting to take place in any one of the four commercial casinos. This legalization would fully be enforced once the federal ban known as PASPA was lifted, which it was in 2018.

Since then, the wheels have been in slow motion. In January, a set of rules and regulations were drawn up and approved by the New York State Gaming Commission on an introductory basis. These rules and regulations were not set in stone and could be changed if need be. The regulations were lawfully accepted in June 2019 to allow commercial casinos in the state of New York to apply for their sports betting licenses.

The rules and regulations that were cemented into law prohibit residents from betting on any college sports from schools within the state as well as any outside college event if that event will be taking place in New York. Secondly, bettors are only allowed to place bets within the walls of the four commercial casinos or the seven Indian casinos should they participate in sports wagering at their establishments. All land-based sportsbooks will not be offering a mobile aspect to their sports betting platforms as mobile betting is still prohibited.

Where To Bet On Sports In New York

Four commercial casinos in New York have the ability to apply for licenses to offer sports wagering at their facilities. These casinos are the Tioga Downs Casino in Nichols, NY, Resort World Catskills in Monticello, NY, del Lago Resort and Casino in Waterloo, NY, and Rivers Casino and Resort Schenectady in Schenectady, NY. Not one of these casinos currently offers sports betting. New York residents and the operators themselves are hopeful that they will all be licensed by the time the 2019 NFL season rolls around. Casinos are presently in the process of becoming fully licensed.

Governor Andrew Cuomo has declined to sign off on legal mobile sports betting for the state. No real reason has been given as to why he does not want to legalize mobile wagers. The matter will not be brought to the House again until the 2020 session. However, member of the New York Senate, Joseph Addabbo Jr believes that the mobile aspect of sports betting is crucial.

“Experiences in other states have demonstrated that implementing sports betting without a mobile component leaves those states where people cannot wager with their phones or other devices at a competitive disadvantage,” Addabbo said in a statement. “Ultimately, I hope the Governor will choose to embrace the great benefits that sports betting, including the mobile component, will bring to New York in terms of employment, additional funding for education, addressing illegal gambling, and ensuring our competitiveness with other states.”

Will The New York Giants Be A Winning Team In 2019?

The New York Giants have won only eight games in the last two seasons.

Their last Super Bowl appearance and victory was in 2011.

NEW YORK – The New York Giants have been on a roller coaster of seasons ever since their Super Bowl win almost ten years ago. Last year, they won one out of their first eight games, despite adding new coach Pat Shurmur. In 2017, they went 3-13 for the season while 2018 gave them a record of 5-11. Under the direction of their new coach, they were able to make a slight improvement.

Pat Shurmur was hired, not because he had a stellar record as a coach but because he was known to make miracles when it comes to the offensive line. The Giants could use a miracle when it comes to their offense. Eli Manning is still their main quarterback, but they just obtained the first round draft pick, Daniel Jones. If Manning doesn’t show up to the game ready to play, he may be benched early on in the season for Jones.

What Will The Giants Look Like In 2019?

Losing Odell Beckham Jr was a huge blow for the Giants as Manning’s record is better when he played with Beckham than when he’s played with any other player. Beckham went to the Browns after becoming a free agent.

While quarterback Daniel Jones was a huge pick in the draft, he may be too green to carry an entire franchise. In truth, no one knows how Jones will play when he gets his chance on the field. The college game is a lot different than that of the NFL stage so Jones will need to learn quickly how to adapt and adapt well.

Running back Saquon Barkley had a tremendous rookie season in 2018. He went 721 yards for 91 receptions and 4 touchdowns with zero fumbles in his first year. Barkley is expected to be the shining star for the Giants offense for the second year in a row.

This could be seen as the season of rebuilding for the New York Giants. The only player they have that is also one of the oldest quarterbacks in the game is Eli Manning. When asked in December by reporters about the 2019 season, Manning said he wasn’t sure about coming back.

"Whenever you get to year 15, these things about your future come up," said Manning.

The rest of the roster looks to be a bunch of unfamiliar faces, even though some have been with the team for a few years. The question is, do we let the fresh-faced quarterback grow with the new team or do we try to fit in our older quarterback that’s almost out the door with the new squad?
