Six men were caught running an illegal sports betting operation in New York.

The men took in over $11 million in sports bets from their online sportsbooks.

Sports betting in New York is legal by using a licensed and regulated sportsbook only.

BROOKLYN, N.Y – Six men were arrested by the Brooklyn Supreme Court for having illegal online gambling sites that made more than $11 million in just seven months.

Of the six men, four of them were from Staten Island. The men – 73-year-old Anthony Sclafani, 58-year-old Joseph Melfi, 60-year-old Petrit Lusha, and 45-year-old Bryan Kelly – were each arrested on Wednesday for accepting illegal sports wagers. Two additional men from New Jersey – 40-year-old Ross Branca and 56-year-old Stephen Barone – were also arrested in the case.

The illegal sports betting operation brought in $11 million between the months of September 2018 and April 2019.

Branca, the leader of the scheme, will be faced with second-degree money laundering along with gambling charges. He was the leader of the operation and supervised Barone, Kelly, and Lush – each who had their own clients.

They bought in about $9 million in bets online and via phone and sometimes using their website www.gameday365.ag which is stationed in Costa Rica.

The six men each pleaded not guilty to conspiracy and gambling charges and were released with no bail and will return to court on March 9, 2020.

“Illegal gambling is not a victim less crime, but an unlawful conduct that is often connected to loansharking, money laundering and to organized crime,” Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez said in a news release.

Another book was also led by Melfi, which brought in $1.92 million in wagers using the website www.playbig365.com.

As New York sports betting has become legal in the state, the state is no longer playing games when it comes to the underground sports betting market. This is one of the many unlicensed sports betting operators in the state, and state officials will do everything in their power to ensure they collect as much tax revenue from sports betting as possible.

Sports Betting USA held a conference in NYC this past Tuesday where legal mobile sports betting for the state of New York was a topic.

New York currently has four casinos in the upstate area where residents may wager on sporting events.

Many legislators in the state are pushing for legalization as so many residents are traveling to New Jersey to use their mobile platform, allowing the Garden State to benefit in revenue.

NEW YORK – The standstill on the issue of New York mobile sports betting continues. In June, four upstate casinos received approval to open up legal sportsbooks, however, lawmakers were never sold on the idea of residents using their phones to place wagers on the games. One person, in general, has qualms on mobile sports betting and that person is basically the decision-maker himself, Governor Andrew Cuomo.

“Sports betting, first of all, does not make you that much money,” said Cuomo earlier this year. “They raised something like $13 million — $13 million is a rounding error in our state budget. I am not a fan of when you can bet anytime from your cellphone.”

Legislation for the state of New York opens back up in January where there is hope that changes can be made to the sports betting bill to involve mobile wagers. Cuomo maintains that this type of wager is not constitutional and for it to even be considered, a change in the constitution needs to be made. However, Senator Joseph Addabbo Jr knows mobile sports wagers will become a reality for the state at some point.

“It’s not a question of if; it’s when,” said Addabbo Jr. “It’s going to happen. People want to bet in New York. They don’t want to get in the car and drive two hours upstate, and they’d rather not get in the car and go over the bridge to New Jersey, but they’re doing that now.”

New Yorkers have been crossing the bridge into New Jersey and stopping at rest stops to place their mobile sports bets. While talks should begin in January, a report that should’ve been out by now listing the good and bad of making mobile sports betting legal will not be coming out until April 2020. While there is no telling what the report will say, Assemblyman J. Gary Pretlow is sure it will be in favor of launching the mobile platform.

“I know what the report’s going to say: It’s going to say, ‘Do it,’” Pretlow said.

It is estimated that a minimum of 30% of New Jersey’s mobile sports betting business is coming from residents of New York. As it stands, the Garden State gets 80% of all of their wagers on sporting events through the use of cellphone applications. If in 2020 New York sports betting is apporved, they would become the biggest state in the US to offer sports wagers from every available platform.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – College football is here! Week 1 began earlier this week, but the heart of the games is played on Saturday. Between a few conference opponents opening their seasons, a neutral site top-25 matchup, and a handful of other rivalry storylines, the excitement is palpable across the country.

Not every program will be playing in this weekend’s slate of games, but you can be sure that the ones who are will see heavy betting action from the legal sportsbooks in the area.

Remember, some states have restrictions on the games you can bet on. For example, betting on collegiate teams at Iowa sportsbooks is allowed but they do not offer player prop bets for the college action. Meanwhile, other states like New Jersey do not allow for betting lines to be offered on any school that is from the area, regardless of where the game is being played (or if two non-Jersey programs are playing inside the state).

With this, bettors can always switch borders into a different state without their restrictions, but this can be a hassle. Instead, using an offshore betting site may be the best bet, as travel time and convenience are points of emphasis in support of the overseas operators.

Just because a line is offered in a local sportsbook, it does not mean that is “the” line for the game. Every sportsbook uses different equations to come to their spread and moneyline numbers. Then after bettors lay their money down, these odds can change even more in order for the books to keep their balance.

A good bettor never buys the first line they see, but shops around for the best option to take. This is just another reason why the offshore sportsbooks are still superior to the in-state counterparts. But regardless of your outlet for sports betting in New York, be sure to tune in to one of these games:

Six years ago the state signed Senate Bill S5883, to enable sports betting to take place in any one of the four commercial casinos. This legalization would fully be enforced once the federal ban known as PASPA was lifted, which it was in 2018.

Since then, the wheels have been in slow motion. In January, a set of rules and regulations were drawn up and approved by the New York State Gaming Commission on an introductory basis. These rules and regulations were not set in stone and could be changed if need be. The regulations were lawfully accepted in June 2019 to allow commercial casinos in the state of New York to apply for their sports betting licenses.

The rules and regulations that were cemented into law prohibit residents from betting on any college sports from schools within the state as well as any outside college event if that event will be taking place in New York. Secondly, bettors are only allowed to place bets within the walls of the four commercial casinos or the seven Indian casinos should they participate in sports wagering at their establishments. All land-based sportsbooks will not be offering a mobile aspect to their sports betting platforms as mobile betting is still prohibited.

Where To Bet On Sports In New York

Four commercial casinos in New York have the ability to apply for licenses to offer sports wagering at their facilities. These casinos are the Tioga Downs Casino in Nichols, NY, Resort World Catskills in Monticello, NY, del Lago Resort and Casino in Waterloo, NY, and Rivers Casino and Resort Schenectady in Schenectady, NY. Not one of these casinos currently offers sports betting. New York residents and the operators themselves are hopeful that they will all be licensed by the time the 2019 NFL season rolls around. Casinos are presently in the process of becoming fully licensed.

Governor Andrew Cuomo has declined to sign off on legal mobile sports betting for the state. No real reason has been given as to why he does not want to legalize mobile wagers. The matter will not be brought to the House again until the 2020 session. However, member of the New York Senate, Joseph Addabbo Jr believes that the mobile aspect of sports betting is crucial.

“Experiences in other states have demonstrated that implementing sports betting without a mobile component leaves those states where people cannot wager with their phones or other devices at a competitive disadvantage,” Addabbo said in a statement. “Ultimately, I hope the Governor will choose to embrace the great benefits that sports betting, including the mobile component, will bring to New York in terms of employment, additional funding for education, addressing illegal gambling, and ensuring our competitiveness with other states.”

SportsBettingNewYork.com knows with no mobile sports wagering in the state, New Jersey rejoices at the influx of bets they’ll receive from their New York neighbors when it comes to mobile sports betting. After all, New Jersey is just over the bridge. In a city like New York, mobile sports wagering would be the most convenient for New Yorkers to participate in. Until then, they’ll have to travel to casinos upstate to place their legal sports bets or get themselves to New Jersey. Let’s just hope the casinos of New York are fully licensed by the start of the football season.

NEW YORK – If you’re a New York Giants fan and don’t have a betting account at FanDuel, you’re missing out. Right now, several months before the NFL season even kicks off, FanDuel has odds up for every single Giants game on the schedule.

For sportsbooks, that kind of lead time is unprecedented. At most books (both onshore and off), you can currently find odds on games for Week 1 of the upcoming campaign, but that’s it.

At FanDuel, you can wager on spreads and straights for all 16 Giants contests in the regular season.

This makes sense, of course. FanDuel is the in-house bookmaker at The Meadowlands in East Rutherford, NJ. This is the same complex that houses MetLife Stadium, where the G-Men play their home games.

Of course, the Jets play their home games at MetLife, too, and they aren’t getting the same front-and-center treatment on the odds boards. This shows that despite both teams calling The Big M home, the Giants are leaps and bounds more popular in the region.

While the Giants aren’t expected to compete for a division title (+1000), conference crown (+3400), or NFL championship (+7000) this year, their individual regular season matchups have some moneymaking opportunities for the savvy bettor.

Straight up, the Giants are currently underdogs in 12 of their 16 scheduled games. The biggest potential payouts on the board can be found in Week 1 against the Cowboys (+250), Week 6 against the Patriots (+390), Week 11 against the Bears (+270), and Week 13 against the Eagles (+300).

On the other side, as favorites, the Giants are currently trending most strongly in Week 7 against the Cardinals (-210) and Week 14 against the Dolphins (-235).

It’s important to note that at this early stage, all of FanDuel’s Giant spreads have reasonable prices of between +100 (even) and -115, with most settling in at the industry standard -110.

If the outlandishly high juice attached to Giants games at the FanDuel sportsbook last season is any indication, these odds are likely to get a whole lot worse once the season actually gets underway.

Additionally, there is no word as to whether or not these odds will stay posted once the season starts, as this could be a promotional move to keep bettor interest high in the lead-up to the 2019-2020 campaign.

As always, if you see a line you like, SportsBettingNewYork.com says take it now, because it could be gone tomorrow.

Currently, FanDuel has the Jets at +6000 to win the Super Bowl.

The Jets have +650 odds to win the AFC East and +3400 odds to win the AFC outright.

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. – The new-look New York Jets are looking for some newfound respect, but they know they’ve got to earn it.

With a new GM and head coach, a revamped roster, and nary an old veteran on the team (only two current players are over 30 years old), the club feels settled in for a quick reversal of fortunes.

While the Jets have missed the playoffs every year since 2010 and went 4-12 last year after a pair of 5-11 campaigns, there is ample reason for optimism. It can’t get much worse, at least.

According to four-time Pro Bowl linebacker C.J. Mosley, being an underdog on the field (and the betting boards) is nothing to shy away from.

“Now that we’ve got a new little mix-up, got some new people around and some new faces, we’re all eager and we’re all ready. We know the whole NFL is sleeping on the Jets, so we’re ready to prove them wrong.”

In addition to adding Mosley, the Jets also landed Le’Veon Bell this offseason. A potential franchise-altering running back like Bell has Jets fans looking at their young club’s massive upside. The team also expects big things out of second-year QB Sam Darnold.

Still, sports bettors are unconvinced. Gang Green will have to show them something on the field before these bettors are willing to reciprocate with too much of green of their own.

Right now, FanDuel – the house sportsbook at The Meadowlands, where the Jets play their home games – have pretty long odds on the home team. The Jets are currently sitting at +650 to win the AFC East, +3400 to win the AFC Championship, and +6000 to win the Super Bowl.

The Jets, who haven’t made the playoffs in nearly a decade, currently have +320 odds to earn a postseason berth and -440 odds to miss out. Their season win total at FanDuel is set at 7 games, with the over pulling -160 odds and the under settling in at +135.

Removing the home-town bias from the lines doesn’t serve the Jets much better on the boards, but it might entice more bettors to go big on New York.

At Bovada and most competing offshore sportsbooks, the Jets are trending at +650 to win the AFC East, +4000 to win the AFC Championship, and +8000 to win the Super Bowl.

SportsBettingNewYork.com thinks if you’re big on the Green & White this season, offshore betting sites are where you want to place your wagers.

Of course, if you’re big on green this season, you might not want to touch the Jets at all.
