NEW YORK – Can the Cleveland Browns beat the New York Jets at MetLife Stadium for Monday Night Football? The Jets will be playing without their star quarterback, Sam Darnold who could be out for up to a month with mono. Taking his place will be 27-year old quarterback Trevor Siemian, who has started 24 games, winning 13 of them.

“He’s not a panic guy, he’s got a coolness about him and when things change at that position sometimes other guys can panic a little,” said Jets’ head coach Adam Gase. “But when you have a guy that is really calm and steady, then that calms everybody else down.”

Siemian didn’t see any playing action all of last season so he has been a bit out of practice when it comes to live gameplay. Along with Darnold, the Jets are also out a linebacker in C.J. Mosely, who has a groin injury. Both teams had bad starts to the season, with the Browns losing to the Tennessee Titans 43-13 and the Jets giving up their lead to the Buffalo Bills, losing 17-16.

Despite the ending score, the Browns played well from a defensive standpoint against the Titans. They were able to hold Tennessee when it came to third downs, only allowing them to advance two out of ten times. Wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr, 26, will be making his return to New York, but in a different jersey. OBJ has a kind of magic when it comes to Monday night football. In his last five years in the league, he has had 51 completed catches for 755 yards with a total of seven touchdowns, all during Monday night football games.

With all of New York’s injuries and the Browns' poor performance during their season debut, the odds within a possession between the teams. The Browns have a spread set at (-7, -115) while the Jets are coming into the game with a line of (+7, -105). Moneyline wagers are favoring Cleveland with odds of -300 and the underdog Jets sit at +250. For the point total, the oddsmakers at sportsbooks for New Yorkers looked to adjust the line, but it remains similar to where it opened at 45 points. The game starts at 8:15 p.m. EST and will be aired on the ESPN network.

NEW YORK – The team with the better season last year by all of one game came out victorious last night. The New York Giants beat the New York Jets 31-22 in the preseason opener. The Jets were favored to win but the Giants came ready to play.

Rookie quarterback Daniel Jones, 22, made a mistake during the first play of his professional career. Jones failed to signal for the blocking scheme and running back Wayne Gallman was left 1-on-1 with a defensive end from the Jets. Despite that mistake, he was able to score a touchdown during that drive with a 12-yard pass to wide receiver Bennie Fowler in the endzone.

Even with the mistake involving Gallman, the running back thinks Jones’ performance was terrific.

"I'm impressed with everything. There's not an actual word I'd put on it," said Gallman. "But he's gonna be a great one. He's very poised, very smart — you can tell by his eyes, he comes ready to play and that's something you like to see in your teammates."

Giants wide receiver Reggie White Jr also had a big game. The 23-year-old went 60 yards with 4 catches. The stadium erupted in chants of “Reg-gie!” because of the rookie’s performance. This may or may not have started due to White Jr having more than 50 friends and family attend his first NFL game.

The Giants went on to beat the Jets by 9 points. With Jones playing so well, head coach Pat Shurmur was asked whether Eli Manning would still be starting quarterback during the regular season.

"Listen, we’re not going to play the what-ifs. I would say this: Nothing has changed," said Shurmur. "This was the first game. I expect Daniel to play well. I expect him to go out and improve, and for the people that don't know him, impress them. Our expectations for him have not changed ... our situation has not changed."

The Giants will face the Chicago Bears on Friday, August 16th at 7:30 pm ET. The game will be aired on the NFLN channel.

The Jets

The beginning of the preseason opener commenced with Jets starting players like quarterback Sam Darnold and wide receiver Jamison Crowder. Both the offense and defense showed their skills on the field. By the second quarter, the second-string players which included quarterback Trevor Siemian held their own. The second half of the game was dominated by the Giants. NEW YORK – Tight end Chris Herndon, 23, has been suspended for four games due to an incident that occurred in June 2018. Herndon was charged with a DWI and pleaded guilty in January 2019 after a woman involved in the accident claimed injury. These legal troubles have put him in direct violation of NFL policies and programs on the abuse of substances.

Herndon will not be able to play until October 7th. The Jets do not have much talent in the form of a replacement for Herndon through the four games that he will be missing. During his NFL debut last season, Herndon went 502 yards with 39 receptions and 4 touchdowns.

What Will The Jets Do In Herndon’s Absence?

Quarterback Sam Darnold has built up terrific chemistry with Herndon last season which only got stronger during the offseason. Until he can return to the field in October, it looks as though the New York Jets will try not to make any heavy plays in the tight end position. They have newly acquired Trevon Wesco from West Virginia in the fourth round of the NFL draft but whether or not Wesco will be used as a tight end or a fullback remains to be seen.

The other two tight ends on the roster are Daniel Brown and Eric Tomlinson. Brown had zero receptions last season and Tomlinson went 72 yards last season with a total of 8 receptions. EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. – The new-look New York Jets are looking for some newfound respect, but they know they’ve got to earn it.

With a new GM and head coach, a revamped roster, and nary an old veteran on the team (only two current players are over 30 years old), the club feels settled in for a quick reversal of fortunes.

While the Jets have missed the playoffs every year since 2010 and went 4-12 last year after a pair of 5-11 campaigns, there is ample reason for optimism. It can’t get much worse, at least.

According to four-time Pro Bowl linebacker C.J. Mosley, being an underdog on the field (and the betting boards) is nothing to shy away from.

“Now that we’ve got a new little mix-up, got some new people around and some new faces, we’re all eager and we’re all ready. We know the whole NFL is sleeping on the Jets, so we’re ready to prove them wrong.”

In addition to adding Mosley, the Jets also landed Le’Veon Bell this offseason. A potential franchise-altering running back like Bell has Jets fans looking at their young club’s massive upside. The team also expects big things out of second-year QB Sam Darnold.

Still, sports bettors are unconvinced. Gang Green will have to show them something on the field before these bettors are willing to reciprocate with too much of green of their own.

The Jets, who haven’t made the playoffs in nearly a decade, currently have +320 odds to earn a postseason berth and -440 odds to miss out. Their season win total at FanDuel is set at 7 games, with the over pulling -160 odds and the under settling in at +135.

Removing the home-town bias from the lines doesn’t serve the Jets much better on the boards, but it might entice more bettors to go big on New York.

At Bovada and most competing offshore sportsbooks, the Jets are trending at +650 to win the AFC East, +4000 to win the AFC Championship, and +8000 to win the Super Bowl.
